Standing Together Against Hate: Public Statement of Solidarity with Temple Emanu-El

We are deeply disturbed by the act of violence directed at Temple Emanu-El in North York, where shots were reportedly fired while congregants were inside. We are profoundly relieved that no one was physically harmed.

An attack on a synagogue is not only an attack on the Jewish community — it is an attack on the moral fabric of our society and the fundamental freedom to worship in safety and peace. Hate directed at any house of worship threatens us all.

Temple Emanu-El, under the leadership of Rabbi Debra Landsberg, has been a steadfast partner in interfaith solidarity. In the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque massacre in 2019, members of their congregation stood shoulder to shoulder with us and many others in a powerful Ring of Peace. They showed up for us in our moment of grief.

Today, we stand firmly with them.

We call upon civic leaders, law enforcement, and community partners to ensure that all houses of worship are protected and that acts of hate are met with firm accountability. Violence and intimidation must never be normalized.

Our city and our country are strongest when we refuse to allow fear to divide us. We remain committed to building bridges of understanding, strengthening interfaith cooperation, and confronting hatred with courage, clarity, and unity.

Hate will not define us. Solidarity will.

Sincerely,

ISM Board of Directors
